The Gospel of Mark is the shortest of the four gospels and is believed to have been the first to be composed. It narrates the life and ministry of Jesus as the urgent breaking-in of the reign of God. Mark's gospel contains no nativity story, beginning with Jesus as an adult coming to his baptism. It also has an abrupt ending which previews Jesus' resurrection but leaves the disciples awaiting his first appearance to them. The word "immediately" is used over and over in Mark's gospel: this book tells us of good news that cannot be delayed and demands a response.
John Mark is identified as a missionary companion of Paul and Barnabas in the Book of Acts. According to one tradition, he later became a companion of Peter, and was credited with the composition of the gospel that bears his name using the eyewitness accounts that Peter had shared with him.
St. Mark's Day is celebrated on April 25. We'll have a simple service of Holy Eucharist in the church at noon. All are welcome.
