Sunday, February 25: Discussion Forum on Martin Luther King, Jr.'s Letter from Birmingham Jail
Sponsored by Incarnation’s Committee for Becoming Beloved Community in acknowledgement of Black History Month, we will meet Sunday, February 25 at 12 pm in Short Hall.
Martin Luther King’s letter, written in April 1963 while in prison for participating in nonviolent demonstrations, deserves a reading as a historic condemnation of segregation. King, an eloquent leader of the civil rights movement, was responding to a public statement from eight white religious leaders stating their concerns that the protests were “unwise and untimely.” He wrote his letter on scraps of paper given to his attorneys. The letter was published in a number of publications, including The Atlantic Monthly and in King’s 1964 book, Why We Can’t Wait.
The forum will focus on topics taken from the letter that should promote discussion on the historical context of the letter, its relevancy today, effective action, and the implications of the letter for our goal of Becoming Beloved Community.
