Sunday, February 2: Feast of the Presentation
February 2 marks the Feast of the Purification, also called Candlemas. This feast day, the fortieth day after Christmas, commemorates the presentation of the infant Jesus in the Temple at Jerusalem. There, two aged prophets, Simeon and Anna, recognized him as the newborn Messiah (Luke 2:22-39). The blessing of candles and candlelight processions are traditional on this day.
When Candlemas falls on a Sunday, it takes priority over the regular Sunday observance, so this year we have the rare opportunity to celebrate Candlemas at our 8:00 and 10:15 Sunday liturgies.
