General Convention News
As a first-time deputy for the General Convention, I was excited to attend and was not disappointed! Our deputation really bonded and that made the experience extra-special. The sessions were productive, and it was fascinating to see how our Canons and liturgy can be amended. It was also, of course, marvelous being a part of the election of our new Presiding Bishop-Elect, the Rt. Rev. Sean Rowe! There were so many other memorable moments, too.
- Meeting Presiding Bishop Michael Bruce Curry for the second time and having a photo with him!
- Being a lay deputy for Northern California and having my sister, Tamsen, be a clergy deputy for the Diocese of Missouri! This was my first General Convention and her eighth and final one. She’s retiring next year and wants to give others the chance to be part of these.
- Attending a Revival and listening to Bishop Curry’s incredible sermon, which was simultaneously translated into ASL and Spanish on stage.
- Meeting other deputies, such as those from Missouri, Pennsylvania, Idaho, Haiti, Honduras, and the Dominican Republic.
- Participating in the Bishops Against Anti-Gun Violence rally in a park with all 158 bishops and approximately 830 deputies. We heard from several high school students who have been affected by gun violence, and we sang “We are Marching in the Light of God,” led by our incredible Chaplain.
- Voting to have both Howard Thurman and Harriet Tubman be made saints! Also voting to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Ordination of the Philadelphia 11 (the first Episcopal women priests)!
I hope to have the opportunity to represent the Diocese in 2027.
