Did you see the wonderful table laden with summer squash, tomatoes, cucumbers, blackberry muffins, pickled peppers, and more outside Farlander Hall on August 25? And the friendly, fresh faces of Eleanor and Margaret Elias, operating Incarnation’s new Farm Stand? What a pleasure to see parish children caring for God’s creation by sharing its bounty in this fun and eco-friendly way!
Eleanor, 10, came up with the idea of creating the Farm Stand to support the community garden that parish families, led by her mom, Amanda, that parish children, their families and others, created this year. “The garden has been a lot of fun,” says Eleanor. “We wanted to help it grow,” adds Margaret, 8.
The Farm Stand offers produce and goodies made with produce from the garden, along with contributions of surplus vegetables and fruit from parish gardeners. In keeping with the Green Team’s goal of ensuring that the food we grow is used and enjoyed, rather than wasted and sent to landfill, everything at the Farm Stand is offered free of charge. Donations or “tips” are welcome and will be used for the Incarnation Garden.
The children, including Phoebe Bonacorso (pictured with Margaret and Eleanor) and other youngsters who have helped plant and harvest the garden, will set up the Farm Stand most Sundays through the harvest season, which corresponds with the church’s special Season of Creation. Be sure to check it out!
Please note, when the Farm Stand is not open, the Produce Exchange will continue to be available in Farlander — look for the baskets on the little table near the kitchen entrance. Feel free to trade for items you don’t have or simply take what you will eat. Reducing food waste is key to lowering greenhouse gas emissions and improving food security. Let’s do what we can to help!
